Rug Size & Placement Guide
A properly proportioned rug anchors the room, frames your furniture, and unifies interior aesthetics. Explore room-by-room architectural layout recommendations.
Living Room Layout Options
Your living room rug sets the visual boundary for your seating zone. Choose from all legs on, front legs on, or a coffee table focal point based on your space dimensions.
All Legs on the Rug
Ideal for expansive living spaces. The sofa, armchairs, and side tables rest entirely on the rug, pulling the room into a cohesive, expansive luxury sanctuary.
Front Legs on the Rug
The designer favorite. Placing the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug creates an anchored, intimate conversation zone while leaving floor borders open.
Coffee Table Focal Point
Perfect for compact apartments, study nooks, or minimal layouts. Only the central coffee table rests on the rug, accentuating exposed hardwood or marble flooring.
Bedroom Rug Placements
Stepping onto soft, warm wool first thing in the morning defines bedroom luxury. Choose between placing under the lower two-thirds of the bed or framing with side runners.
Under Lower 2/3 of Bed
Rug begins just in front of your bedside nightstands and extends 2–3 feet on either side and past the foot of the bed. Provides soft landing underfoot.
All Bedroom Furniture On
Both nightstands, the entire bed frame, and end-of-bed bench sit entirely on the rug. Designed for spacious master bedrooms requiring hotel-grade grandeur.
Twin Bedside Runners
A versatile, cost-effective alternative. Place two matching runners on either side of the bed to enjoy tactile warmth without covering central under-bed flooring.
Dining Room Proportions
The Golden Dining Rule: Always leave at least 60 cm (24 inches) of rug extending beyond all edges of your dining table so dining chairs stay smoothly on the rug even when guests pull them out to sit.
Medium Dining Suite
Fits standard 6-seater rectangular tables (approx 160–180 cm length), leaving plenty of room for all pulled-out chairs to remain firmly on the carpet pile.
Large Dining Table
Essential for formal dining rooms. Accommodates 8 or 10-seater tables without chair legs catching awkwardly on the edge of the rug backing.
Hallways, Corridors & Entryways
A runner elongates hallways and guides guests through entryways. Aim to leave 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) of bare floor visible along each side of the corridor wall.
Standard Hallway Runner
Leave 4 to 5 inches of exposed floor flanking either side to frame the corridor architecture without crowding baseboards.
Foyer Statement Rug
Welcomes guests with tactile warmth right past the main doorway. Check door swing clearance to ensure front doors open effortlessly over pile height.

How to Measure Your Space Accurately
Follow these five simple steps before purchasing to guarantee seamless proportions and zero guesswork.
Painter's Tape Test
Outline the prospective rug dimensions on your floor using blue painter's tape to visualize the spatial footprint before buying.
Door Clearance
Measure the distance between the bottom of your doors and the floor. Ensure rug pile thickness won't catch during door swings.
Perimeter Border
Leave 12 to 18 inches (30–45 cm) of bare flooring visible between the outer rug edge and the perimeter walls for ideal framing.
Walkway Traffic
Position the rug so foot traffic either walks completely on the rug or completely off it to avoid stumbling on edges.
